Exclusive; Winner Sports can reveal that the billionaire Newcastle United F.C owner Michael James Wallace AKA Mike Ashley will consider selling the football club if a suitable offer is made.
Although the unpopular owner has recently said he has “no intention, desire or ambition” to sell, sources close to the businessman have now suggested otherwise. Ashley feels Newcastle are unable to compete with the big clubs already chasing for the lucrative Champions League spots in the English Premier League.
The savvy businessman believes it will cost at least £100m in order for Newcastle United to compete with the likes off Manchester City, Chelsea, Liverpool, Manchester Utd and Tottenham and there is no return of investment (ROI) guarantee.
The Sports Direct founder will now shift his attention to the SPL after The Scottish Premier League was handed a massive boost with their share of TV money from the recent BT Sport mega Champions League TV rights deal.
Should Rangers FC win promotion this year and next, then they will return to the Scottish Premiership for the 2015-16 season. If Ashley was to purchase Rangers Football Club then he would only realistically be competing with Celtic for that lucrative Champions League spot.
Such a significant reward for a not so hefty investment.
