Maciej Szczesny launches staunch defence of his under fire son

Despite being hailed as one of the best young goalkeepers around in world football when he burst into the scene for Arsenal back in 2011, Wojciech Szczęsny has evidently not developed as well as everyone expected and many believe that the custodian could be on the verge of throwing his immense talent away.

Szczęsny has struggled for consistency throughout his Arsenal career and the current campaign has been another difficult one for the Gunners number one.

To sum up his season so far, Szczęsny put in a woeful performance in his sides’ 2-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton and to further anger manager Arsene Wenger, the 24-year old was reportedly caught smoking in the showers after the game.

Szczęsny’s cigarette antics is believed to have been seen as the last straw in his Arsenal career by Wenger and it has since been claimed that the Frenchman will not use the Poland international at all for the rest of the season by handing the number one spot to David Ospina.

It still has not been confirmed by Wenger or Arsenal whether Szczęsny did in fact light a cigarette following the Southampton game but the goalkeeper’s father, Maciej, has moved on to launch a staunch defence of his son and has stated that he does not believe the 24-year old is ‘stupid’ enough to smoke in the locker room.

Maciej then went on to defend Szczęsny’s performance in Arsenal’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Southampton by stating that his son’s mistakes have been exaggerated and then went on to slam the Gunners’ backline for not giving their goalkeeper enough protection.

Maciej said, “I don’t believe Wojciech is dumb enough to smoke in the locker room.

“Please look at the Arsenal defense . How these guys are playing, is a disaster. But somehow nobody pays attention to it. The entire Arsenal defense this season is embarrassing.”

“Someone should support him (Wojciech) but the coaching staff at Arsenal prefer not to. Wojciech needs someone who’ll critically analyze every game with him but also remain positive.”
