There has been quite a storm created in the media in recent times surrounding the future of superstar Lionel Messi at Barcelona.
Reports in Spain had claimed that Messi has set his sights on leaving the Catalan giants after falling out with manager Luis Enrique and there has understandably been a lot of interest surrounding the story.
Messi had been linked with a move to Chelsea |
If indeed Messi does decide to leave Barcelona, not many would be able to afford arguably the best player in the world but one name which had cropped up as a likely destination for the 27-year old recently was Premier League side Chelsea.
Given their financial might – Chelsea are one of the select clubs in the world that can realistically ponder signing Messi but at a quoted price of around £200million plus astronomical wages, even the Blues would struggle to pull off such a deal.
Now to further pour cold water to reports linking Messi with a move to Chelsea, assistant manager Steve Holland has stated that the rumors have no credibility whatsoever and added that even if they were interested, the strict Financial Fair Play rules would mean that the deal is almost impossible for any club to complete.
Chelsea not looking to sign Messi says assistant manager |
Speaking to reporters, Holland said, “Jose has made it quite clear his expectations are that nobody comes and nobody goes during the transfer window. We’re perfectly happy with what we have.
“It’s not a decision I personally would make. When you look at the numbers being mentioned around Messi, I would think it’s an impossible deal for any club working within the financial fair play rules.”
