Liverpool have been told to double their bid if they want to sign Inter Milan midfielder Mateo Kovacic.
The Reds have been watching the midfielder all season and are understood to have made a £7million bid which was instantly rejected.
Brendan Rodgers’ men have been told they may have a chance of signing him if they go beyond £14milllion for one of the most sought after young players in Europe.
Kovacic has been attracting the interest of Chelsea, Arsenal and Everton yet he has fallen out of favour with current boss Roberto Mancini. Although he is currently injured, Mancini does not rate him as highly as previous managers.
So Liverpool have been trying to take advantage of the situation with a move for him on the cheap.

Yet despite having a host of Europe’s’ top clubs interested in him, Kovacic’s representative Nikky Vuksan claims the player is staying at the San Siro.
He deals with Liverpool on a regular basis and claims to be unaware of any moves for the player. In football speak, that usually means something is going on but all parties want to keep it secret for now.
Vuksan said: “It is not going to happen. Mateo extended his contract with Inter in January. Could it be that clubs are negotiating? No, that is not possible without Mateo and me knowing about it.
“Also, I have a player at Liverpool, Dejan Lovren so I would know about it. He’ll stay at Inter.”
Yet Inter have let it be known to sources close to the club they would be willing to part with the Croatian. Kovacic has scored eight goals in 34 appearances in all competitions for Inter this season but is out with a knee ligament injury.
Rodgers will be given the go ahead for a summer rebuilding plan at Liverpool after the club have decided to stick with him as manager – for now. They have just gone a third season without a trophy and there are sections of supporters who wants Rodgers out. But he will meet with owner John W Henry in the next few weeks to discuss the future and key transfer targets.
