EXCLUSIVE: Manchester United are ready to pounce for Leeds United defender Sam Byram
Byram has long been considered one of the brightest young defenders around in England since bursting into the scene for Leeds United back in 2012 and the 20-year old has consistently been linked with a move to a Premier League side over the last 18 months or so.
Now to all but confirm Byram’s exit from Elland Road, it has been revealed by Leeds United owner Massimo Cellino that the defender has rejected a new contract offer from the club and has his heart set on a move to greener pastures.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Cellino had said, “Sam Byram is the only one that maybe thinks Leeds is too small for him. He maybe thinks he deserves to be in a bigger team and a bigger club, and maybe he’s right. But when I hear that a player from Leeds, with his agent, that he thinks that Leeds is not big enough for him, that he wants something bigger, I felt really embarrassed.
“He didn’t sign the new contract and he won’t sign it anymore. He’s been offered a contract a few times, he didn’t want to sign and I am deeply offended.”
Following Cellino’s admission, it has been no surprise to see Byram being linked with a move to a host of Premier League sides and now Winner Sports can reveal that giants Manchester United are plotting a move for the young defender.
While the likes of Everton, Arsenal and Liverpool have consistently been mentioned as the clubs leading the race to sign Byram, even Manchester United have closely monitored the situation of the defender and the Red Devils are now set to place a bid in excess of £10million for the Leeds star during the January transfer window.
Alan Smith was the last player to make a move from Leeds to Manchester United back in 2004 and the Championship side’s faithful will surely be less than pleased if Byram were to make a move to Old Trafford.
