Charlton Athletic are set to take the shock decision of appointing club captain Johnnie Jackson as their next manager, according to reports
Following Charlton’s relegation into League One, manager Jose Riga had immediately tendered his resignation and the club did not waste any time in identifying Chris Wilder as their main managerial target.
However, talks between Wilder and Charlton broke down and the former Northampton United boss instead made a move to Sheffield United.
Now the club hierarchy is under real pressure to find the right candidate for the tough job at the Valley and a number of names such as Russell Slade, Nigel Adkins and Dougie Freedman among others have all been linked with a move to Charlton.
Now in a surprise link, it has been revealed that Charlton are considering appointing current club captain Johnnie Jackson as their next manager.
Jackson has made over 200 appearances for Charlton since joining the club back in 2010 and the 33-year-old is a much adored figure among the club faithful.
However, Jackson’s contract at the Valley has not been renewed as of yet and it was believed that the midfielder would be leaving Charlton this summer.
It now turns out that Charlton have other plans with Jackson and are looking to appoint him manager of the club. Jackson is most certainly popular at Charlton but his lack of managerial experience means that the prospective appointment could be a very risky one for the Addicks.
